“Betsy” 1600 Sport

My dad bought me my first car when I was 18. It was a mint Ford Escort 1600 Sport which I still love until today. White on white, model year 1976, the same year I was born. It was my first RWD car & my first experience trying to drift a car, which did not end up with great success when I wrapped it round a lamp post about a year later. Since then, I’ve always wanted to rebuild the Escort but never really got down to it. My dad ended up losing the registration card and finally the shell rotted away to a point of no return.

This video however has reignited my interest in the Escort. It could be an excuse to build one for old time sake. This particular car driven by Simon Mc Kinley has a 2.4L 16V Warrior head (Twincam) with 301bhp, 232tf lb of torque & weighs 780kg. Thats 385bhp/ton. Enjoy.

Preparation Works

The car is being stripped down for maintenence work as we speak. We had the engine out last week, disassembled and checked for wear & tear. Other components like final drive, LSD & clutch has been checked & replaced if necessary.

We’re still waiting for the NISMO gearbox repair kit. I was experiencing shifting problems in 2nd & 4th gear. So it was time for an overhaul before we shipped the car of to the States. Only 3 weeks to go before the car leaves.
